Programme
Gioachino Rossini: Stabat mater
Overview

The Rossini Opera Festival 2026 concludes its prestigious programme with "Stabat Mater", one of the most powerful and emotionally profound sacred works by Gioachino Rossini. Presented at the Auditorium Scavolini in Pesaro on 23 August 2026, this masterpiece brings the festival to a grand finale with the union of dramatic intensity, spiritual depth, and Rossini’s unmistakable musical brilliance.

Composed between 1831 and 1841, Stabat Mater reveals a different side of Rossini’s genius. Best known for his operatic masterpieces, the composer transforms the medieval hymn describing the sorrow of the Virgin Mary at the foot of the Cross into a work of extraordinary expressive power. The composition combines the grandeur of sacred music with the theatrical instinct of an opera composer, creating moments of deep contemplation, dramatic contrast, and luminous beauty.

The performance is conducted by Domingo Hindoyan, leading the Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Bologna and the Coro del Teatro Ventidio Basso. The cast features outstanding vocal artists including Vasilisa Berzhanskaya, Anna-Doris Capitelli, Dmitry Korchak, and Adrian Sâmpetrean, with chorus preparation by Pasquale Veleno.

The Rossini Opera Festival, held in the composer’s birthplace of Pesaro, has long been dedicated to rediscovering and presenting Rossini’s complete artistic legacy. Through historically informed performances and world-class musicianship, the festival reveals the full richness of a composer whose influence extends far beyond the comic operas for which he is famous.

In the elegant atmosphere of the Auditorium Scavolini, Stabat Mater becomes a deeply moving musical journey — from grief and reflection to moments of hope and transcendence.

Majestic, spiritual, and profoundly expressive, Rossini’s Stabat Mater at the Rossini Opera Festival offers a rare encounter with the composer’s most intimate voice, performed in the city that continues to celebrate his extraordinary legacy.
