Overview

One of Stanton Welch’s most powerful works and his first full-length ballet returns to the Wortham Theater stage after more than a decade. Madame Butterfly was originally choreographed in 1995 for The Australian Ballet. Set to Puccini’s powerful score, this production is a stunning achievement in neoclassical ballet and remains an international success, with performances across three continents.

A poignant tale of love, hope, and sacrifice, Madame Butterfly follows a beautiful Japanese geisha who gives up her faith and family to marry an American naval lieutenant. Exquisite choreography paired with picturesque sets and costumes by Peter Farmer evokes the mystery and languor of 19th-century Japan. The culmination of the production draws audiences into Cio-Cio San’s emotional journey with striking intimacy and intensity.

History

Madame Butterfly is a deeply moving ballet based on one of the most beloved stories in opera. Set in Japan at the turn of the twentieth century, it tells the tragic tale of the young geisha Cio-Cio-San, whose unwavering love for an American naval officer leads her on a journey of hope, devotion, and heartbreaking sacrifice. With exquisite choreography, beautiful music, and powerful storytelling, this production captures the timeless emotions of one of the world's greatest love stories.

The Brown Theatre is one of the two theatres located in the Wortham Theater Center in downtown Houston, TX. It is a 2,405-seat venue that hosts primarily opera and large ballet productions by two resident companies: the Houston Ballet and the Houston Grand Opera. The Center opened in 1987 and features a glass entry archway and Helen Hayes Chandelier. It is known for its unique acoustical features called “frying pan pods” which enable music to flow through the pods into sections of the opera hall that wouldn’t be considered good listening areas under other circumstances. Despite its size, no seat is more than 138 feet from the stage.
