Programme
Overview

The Beijing Symphony Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Zhu Ruibiao mark the New Year with Strauss waltzes and polkas, Chinese favourites and popular orchestral selections.

Beijing Symphony Philharmonic Orchestra is a professional ensemble with a full complement of sections, whose principals include national first-class performers. Its repertoire spans symphonic and chamber music, original vocal works, film and animation scores, popular music and projects involving Chinese instruments.

Conductor Zhu Ruibiao is a Central Conservatory of Music graduate, a first violinist with the China National Symphony Orchestra and a national first-class performer. Concertmaster Zheng Yi formerly played with the same national orchestra and served as principal second violin of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

The New Year selection places Viennese dance rhythms beside Chinese music. Voices of Spring, The Blue Danube and the Emperor Waltz share the programme with Spring Festival Overture, Blooming Flowers and Full Moon, Jasmine Flower and The Girl of Dabancheng; Canon, Croatian Rhapsody and The Sound of Music add further contrasts.
