Overview

An actress seeks justice for her abused son. At the same time, she is working with a theater company on Euripides' play Hecuba. From the theater to the courtroom, myth and reality intertwine.

While rehearsing the role of Hecuba, who lost everything during the Trojan War, actress Nadia is fighting a battle. Her autistic son has been abused in a specialized institution. The time spent rehearsing is interwoven with the ongoing investigation.

The play moves seamlessly between the stage and the courtroom, with the same actors portraying characters from Euripides and key figures in the legal case, including, in addition to the Prosecutor and the Defense Attorney, a Secretary of State, an educator, and a former employee of the care home.

In this text, based on a recent news story in Switzerland that became a national scandal, Tiago Rodrigues intertwines the universal concerns of 21st-century women with those of the ancient figure. Both have been betrayed by those to whom they entrusted their children: a friend and ally for Hecuba, a public institution for Nadia. These two mirrored stories give voice to a powerful woman, a symbol of the eternal struggle for justice. Author and director Tiago Rodrigues, director of the Avignon Festival, offers a deeply humane theatrical experience, where fiction lends meaning to our own concerns.

After its premiere at the 2024 Avignon Festival, a long European tour, and several revivals in Paris, the play returns to the stage of the Salle Richelieu.

History

Hécube, pas Hécube is an acclaimed contemporary drama by Tiago Rodrigues that intertwines Euripides' ancient tragedy Hecuba with the story of a modern actress fighting for justice after her autistic son suffers abuse in a care institution. Moving between rehearsal room and courtroom, myth and reality merge into a powerful reflection on grief, motherhood, and the search for justice.

Synopsis

While rehearsing Euripides' Hecuba, actress Nadia seeks justice after her autistic son becomes the victim of abuse in a care institution. Ancient tragedy and a modern courtroom drama unfold simultaneously as the same performers portray both mythological and contemporary characters, revealing the timeless struggle for truth and justice.
