Overview

Dream and reality: a profoundly baroque theme. This monument of the European repertoire opens a spectacular reflection on the meaning of our lives, injustice and free will.

Written in 1635, Life Is a Dream is a landmark play of the Spanish Golden Age, a period of artistic vitality in painting, poetry, and theater. A philosophical tale and political drama, it confronts humanity with its place in the world and its complex relationship to reality.

Calderón develops a dual plot. In the Kingdom of Poland, Prince Sigismund has been imprisoned by his father since birth, far from civilization, to thwart a dire omen. Rosaura, who has come from the neighboring kingdom to avenge her betrayed love and honor, stumbles upon the prince's prison tower. The jailer promises her that she can exact her revenge and brings her to the court. Meanwhile, the king, overcome with remorse, decides to give his son Sigismund a chance to succeed him on the throne; he has him put to sleep and taken to the palace where his true identity is revealed. Because he proves brutal and tyrannical, he is sent back to his prison, once again asleep. He must have thought he was dreaming… Soon, the people learn of the existence of a legitimate successor, and a civil war breaks out.

A connoisseur of Baroque theater, Benjamin Lazar aims to reveal the multiple layers of interpretation and showcase the richness of Calderón's language, which alternates between lively dialogue and elegiac moments. To further enhance its impact, a trio of musicians will accompany the characters in the lyrical flights of this waking dream.

History

La vie est un songe is Pedro Calderón de la Barca's masterpiece of Spanish Baroque theatre. Blending philosophy, politics, and poetic drama, it tells the story of Prince Sigismond, imprisoned since birth because of a prophecy, whose unexpected release forces him to confront the fragile boundary between dreams and reality, destiny and free will.

Synopsis

Prince Sigismond has spent his entire life imprisoned because of a prophecy predicting that he will become a tyrant. Given one chance to rule, he fails and is convinced it was all a dream. When a popular uprising frees him for a second time, he must decide whether to obey fate or prove that human beings can change through wisdom, justice, and compassion
