Overview

Harpagon spends as little as possible and hoards his money in a strongbox. He stubbornly tries to profit from everything, even the marriages of his son and daughter. They have no intention of letting their love be stolen from them.

Molière, who played the title role in the 1668 premiere at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal, excels in this highly caricatured portrait of the miser, an unscrupulous usurer whose life is nothing but calculation and paranoia. While he hides his gold in a casket buried in his garden, leading to some irresistible scenes, Harpagon also plans to marry his daughter off "without a dowry" to a wealthy merchant and his son to a rich widow. Except the children have other intentions. Élise is in love with Valère, who sneaks into the household disguised as a steward, and Cléante covets Mariane, unaware that his father has decided to marry her.

Director Lilo Baur observes that, to the theme of forced marriage, recurrent in his plays, Molière adds that of the father-son relationship and the quest for eternal youth. She transposes the action to the post-war period, close to our own time but far removed from the female, parental, and societal emancipation achieved since.

Set in a chic villa on the shores of a Swiss lake, she amplifies the excessive avarice of the wealthy man, who is both buffoonish and cold-hearted. An artist with a boundless imagination, Lilo Baur explores every facet of situational comedy.

History

L'Avare (The Miser) is one of Molière's greatest comedies, centering on the miserly Harpagon, whose obsessive love of money threatens the happiness of his own family. Filled with witty dialogue, mistaken identities, romance, and timeless satire, the play remains one of the masterpieces of French classical theatre.

Synopsis

The wealthy miser Harpagon values money above everything else, even his own children. While secretly guarding his buried fortune, he arranges marriages for financial gain, unaware that his son and daughter are already in love. A series of disguises, misunderstandings, and comic twists eventually expose his greed and lead to an unexpected resolution.
