Overview

"I want to be witty, and know how to reason about things among honest people": Monsieur Jourdain loses himself in his dreams of grandeur, without paying attention to the ridicule and to the great dismay of his relatives.

Molière wrote this comedy-ballet in 1670 for one of the opulent royal celebrations and painted the jubilant portrait of a bourgeois dreaming of nobility.

Since becoming wealthy, Monsieur Jourdain has been eager to learn the manners of "gentlemen of quality." But he practices dancing and fencing with utter ineptitude, and dabbles in music and philosophy. His circle mocks him while simultaneously exploiting his foolishness. His family and friends are not fooled; his wife and maid are among the first to ridicule him. Tensions escalate as he vehemently opposes giving his daughter's hand in marriage to Cléonte because he is not a gentleman. This small group then devises a scheme to outwit him.

Valérie Lesort and Christian Hecq's staging is accompanied by musicians who lend a new, brassy hue to Lully's score. Beyond the pride and absurdity of this man frenetically drawn to royal splendor, they highlight the poetry that springs from such a naive personality: "Like many artists, we work with childhood, and Molière makes his Bourgeois a child who wants to play . Children's dreams are the most powerful because they are not yet tainted by the constraints of education, by imposed norms. They are pure dreams."

History

Le Bourgeois gentilhomme is Molière's celebrated comedy-ballet about the wealthy merchant Monsieur Jourdain, whose obsession with becoming a nobleman leads him into a series of hilarious misunderstandings. Combining theatre, music, dance, and satire, the play remains one of the masterpieces of French classical comedy.

Synopsis

Obsessed with becoming a nobleman, Monsieur Jourdain spends his fortune on lessons in etiquette, music, dancing and philosophy. When he refuses his daughter's marriage to a commoner, an ingenious deception teaches him a memorable lesson about vanity, social ambition and self-delusion.
