Overview

In this satirical comedy, Semione wakes up at night to eat sausage: everyone thinks he wants to commit suicide! His supposed suicide becomes the subject of a vast bargaining process.

This wonderfully farcical play tells the improbable story of a man named Semione, an unemployed man living off his wife and mother-in-law in a communal apartment. Waking up in the middle of the night, roused by a sudden craving for sausage, his life takes an unexpected turn: a series of misunderstandings leads people to believe he wants to commit suicide. The neighbor summoned to help confirms his intention, mistaking the sausage Semione has hidden in his jacket for a pistol.

The rumor spreads. A man of letters requests an audience with him in his small apartment, quickly followed by a priest, a romantic woman, a butcher… Each one asks him to die for their cause. The unsociable young man is immensely proud of the unexpected attention he receives!

According to company member Stéphane Varupenne, “few plays combine such powerful comedy, political depth, and existential questions as this one.” He anchors this farce in the era of the author, Nikolai Erdman, a Russian writer censored and forced into exile in 1933 under Stalin. His staging, accompanied by musicians, blends social commentary with vaudevillian mechanics: the laughter it provokes possesses an extraordinary life force, a bulwark against despair.

History

Le Suicidé is a brilliantly absurd satirical comedy by Russian playwright Nicolaï Erdman. A simple misunderstanding convinces everyone that an unemployed man intends to take his own life, turning him into the center of political, religious, and social manipulation. Filled with razor-sharp wit and unforgettable characters, the play is one of the masterpieces of twentieth-century satire.

Synopsis

When an unemployed man secretly gets up at night to eat some sausage, his neighbours mistakenly believe he is about to take his own life. The misunderstanding spirals out of control as politicians, intellectuals, clergy, and ordinary citizens compete to make his supposed death serve their own interests. What begins as a comic mistake becomes a biting satire on society, ideology, and human ambition.
