Overview

Dorante fell instantly in love with Araminte: getting a job at her house would allow him to get closer to her. He could count on the friendly support of his former valet, now in the lady's service.

“I love her passionately; and that’s what makes me tremble,” Dorante confides to Dubois, his former valet and trusted strategist, who recommends him to Araminte to become her steward in order to get closer to her and, if possible, win her affection.

If hired, his first task will be to study the case file of a lawsuit between Araminte, a young widow, and Count Dorimont. The dispute concerns the ownership of a piece of land; their marriage would resolve it, as it would then belong to the couple. The Count sincerely desires to marry Araminte. He is supported by Madame Argante, who covets a title of nobility for her daughter. The mother orders the new steward to plead the advantages of this marriage to her, which he refuses. Everything hinges on Araminte’s decision.

Without Dubois to confront them, the characters would remain trapped in their fears. This is what moves Christophe Honoré in this play, with which he reunites with the troupe, whom he directed in 2020 in his adaptation of Marcel Proust's *The Guermantes Way*. A writer, filmmaker, and director, he is interested in the inner movement of texts. Here, he approaches Marivaux's language for the mystery it holds, far removed from any artifice, in its purest form. He thus hopes to illuminate the labyrinthine feelings that course through these characters, already mature yet vulnerable, struggling to acknowledge their desires.

History

Les Fausses Confidences is Marivaux's celebrated romantic comedy about love, social class, and carefully orchestrated deception. When the impoverished Dorante falls in love with the wealthy widow Araminte, his former servant devises an ingenious plan to bring the two together, setting in motion a series of emotional revelations and unexpected transformations.

Synopsis

Dorante secretly loves the wealthy widow Araminte but has little hope of winning her because of their social differences. With the help of the clever Dubois, a series of carefully staged "false confidences" gradually reveals hidden feelings, forcing every character to choose between ambition, convention and genuine love.
