Overview

Two factions are at odds within this family: tradition prevails for some, wit for others. Each side supports a suitor for the marriage of the youngest daughter, Henriette.

“There are no winners or losers at the end of the play,” explains Emma Dante. “There is the life of women, always fighting for their rights, and the presence of men, in love but immature.” The Palermo-born director, who has been exploring the themes of family and female emancipation for years, chose Molière in January 2026 for her first collaboration with the Comédie-Française. With *Les Femmes savantes* (The Learned Ladies), written in 1672, she examines how our foremothers, through culture and dreams, managed to shake the patriarchal order.

Her production, presented for the first time this season in the Salle Richelieu, contrasts two conceptions of life. The old world is represented by a trio of men: the patriarch Chrysale, his brother Ariste, and Clitandre, Henriette’s suitor. The modern world is inhabited by women enamored with philosophy, science, and the poetry of a certain Trissotin. Philaminte is an influential wife, her sister-in-law Bélise an emancipated spinster, and her daughter Armande disdains the constraints of marriage. As for the youngest, Henriette, she dreams of marrying her sweetheart Clitandre, ignoring the arranged match her mother has planned. The absurd pervades both camps clashing in this bourgeois household.

When ancient times and the modern age collide, conventions are gleefully shattered.

History

Les Femmes savantes is one of Molière's finest comedies, exploring the conflict between intellectual ambition, family tradition, and love. Through brilliant satire and witty dialogue, the play examines vanity, education, gender roles, and the pursuit of knowledge in seventeenth-century France.

Synopsis

Henriette wants to marry the man she loves, but her mother insists she marry the fashionable intellectual Trissotin instead. As the family divides between reason and pretension, Molière uses comedy to expose vanity, hypocrisy, and the absurd extremes of social ambition.
