Overview

Molière's most cunning valet triumphs with delightful audacity. In a series of adventures, Scapin defends young lovers while mocking their authoritarian fathers.

With nearly 300 performances since 2017, Molière's *The Tricks of Scapin* continues to delight audiences of all ages. Company member Denis Podalydès likes to remind us that it is a "troupe play, written not for the Court but for the people." It premiered in 1671 at the Palais-Royal during a period of renovations. Molière was then freed from the constraints of comedy-ballets and stage machinery plays: it is "pure theater" that gives the director great creative freedom.

In a set evoking the port of Naples, the city where the play takes place, Podalydès brings out all the nuances of this comedy in which Molière champions the younger generation. While their fathers are away traveling, Léandre has fallen in love with Zerbinette, while Octave has married Hyacinte. But their elders have returned, intent on forcing their respective sons into arranged marriages.

Fortunately, Scapin, Léandre's valet, comes to their aid: "To tell you the truth, there are few things I can't do when I set my mind to something." And indeed, he invents numerous schemes, including a fake kidnapping and a ransom demand, to mock the miserly fathers. In this play where generations clash, the buffoonish valet triumphs valiantly. And if he receives blows from a stick, he gives as good as he gets!

History

Les Fourberies de Scapin is one of Molière's most beloved comedies, following the clever servant Scapin as he uses wit, deception, and outrageous tricks to help two young lovers overcome their authoritarian fathers. Bursting with humour, disguises, and fast-paced misunderstandings, the play remains a timeless celebration of intelligence, freedom, and comic invention.

Synopsis

While their fathers are away, Octave secretly marries Hyacinte and Léandre falls in love with Zerbinette. Their happiness is threatened when the fathers return with plans for arranged marriages. To save the young couples, the ingenious servant Scapin launches a whirlwind of tricks, fake kidnappings, and elaborate deceptions, proving that intelligence and humour can triumph over authority.
