Overview

“The philosophical subject of Ruy Blas is the people aspiring to the heights; the human subject is a man who loves a woman; the dramatic subject is a lackey who loves a queen,” Victor Hugo announced in the preface to his play, first performed in 1838. He set it at the Spanish court during the reign of Charles II, while offering a thinly veiled critique of his era.

The play follows Don Salluste, disgraced by the queen, as he carries out his revenge. He has his cousin Don César kidnapped and convinces his valet, Ruy Blas, to assume his noble identity. This disguise allows him to get close to the young queen he secretly loves. Once promoted by her to high office, Ruy Blas puts his intelligence at the service of the state and seeks to eradicate corruption. But Salluste’s Machiavellian plan is tightening.

This central work of the repertoire, first performed at the Comédie-Française in 1879, has not been staged there for twenty-five years. It is directed by Julie Duclos, who recently presented Brecht's Fear and Misery of the Third Reich at the Odéon Théâtre de l'Europe, which is touring this season. Through her production, she aims to encompass all aspects of this Romantic masterpiece: moving from drama to comedy, from the concrete to the lyrical, without ever losing sight of the fact that it is a man's life that is at stake.

History

Ruy Blas is Victor Hugo's monumental Romantic drama about love, ambition, justice, and political corruption. Set in seventeenth-century Spain, the play follows a humble servant who is drawn into a dangerous conspiracy and rises to power while secretly in love with the Queen. Combining political intrigue, passionate romance, and heroic sacrifice, the play remains one of the masterpieces of French theatre.

Synopsis

Driven by revenge, Don Salluste disguises his servant Ruy Blas as a nobleman to deceive the Queen of Spain. Although the scheme is intended to destroy her reputation, Ruy Blas genuinely falls in love with the Queen and proves himself to be an exceptional statesman dedicated to justice and reform. As political conspiracies, hidden identities, and forbidden love collide, Ruy Blas is forced to confront betrayal, honour, and sacrifice in one of the great tragedies of Romantic theatre.
