Overview

Athalie is Jean Racine's final masterpiece and one of the greatest tragedies of French classical theatre. Inspired by the biblical story of Queen Athaliah, the play explores power, faith, legitimacy, and divine justice through a dramatic conflict between tyranny and hope.

Athalie is the final tragedy written by Jean Racine and is widely regarded as the pinnacle of French classical drama. Commissioned in 1691 for the students of the Royal House of Saint-Cyr, the play is inspired by the biblical Books of Kings and Chronicles and tells the story of a kingdom divided by faith, ambition, and the struggle for legitimate power.

Queen Athalie has seized the throne of Judah after ordering the massacre of the royal family, believing that every rightful heir has been eliminated. A devoted worshipper of Baal, she imposes her religion upon the kingdom. Unknown to her, however, the young prince Joas, the legitimate heir to the throne, has been secretly rescued and raised in the Temple under the protection of the High Priest Joad and his wife Josabet.

As Athalie begins to experience disturbing dreams and growing fears about her reign, hidden truths gradually emerge. The conflict between political power and spiritual faith intensifies, leading to a dramatic confrontation that explores justice, destiny, tyranny, and redemption.

Presented as part of the Soirée Répertoire, this special event is performed as an oratorio-style reading with musical accompaniment, allowing audiences to experience Racine's poetic language in its purest theatrical form. Under the artistic direction of Clément Hervieu-Léger, the evening celebrates one of the masterpieces of the Comédie-Française repertoire.
