Verbier Festival 2021

The Verbier Festival, now in its 28th year, announces its return for 17 days of concerts, masterclasses, talks and education events in the picturesque setting of the Swiss Alps.

Programme
Joseph Haydn: Piano Sonata in A flat major, Hob XVI:46
Muzio Clementi: Sonata in A major opus 50 n ° 1
Franz Liszt: Harmonies poétiques et religieuses: Invocation, excerpt
Franz Liszt: Grosses konzertsolo
Overview

Jean-Efflam Bavouzet’s series of Haydn recordings on the Chandos label have been received with unanimously laudatory reviews and accolades over the past decade. In this return to the Festival, the pianist shares his palpable affection for Haydn’s works with the composer’s 31st sonata in A-flat major before moving on to Clementi and the drama of Liszt.

Haydn completed his richly expressive Sonata in A flat major No 31 in 1768 as the newly promoted Esterházy Court Kapellmeister. An Allegro moderato opens, replete with delicate embellishments, pauses, and shifts of mood and texture. Next comes an Adagio in the unusual key of D flat, its intimate contrapuntal language reminiscent of JS Bach, before an effervescent Presto finale in compact sonata form. Clementi’s three-movement Sonata in A major also borrows a Baroque model, via its own Adagio’s flowing central canon. Invocation meanwhile gives voice to Liszt’s devout Catholic faith; the first of his ten Harmonies poétiques et religieuses, it’s a prayer invoking God’s presence. The single-movement Grosses Konzertsolo then displays his concert virtuoso side, anticipating his great Sonata in B minor in its scale, poetry and technical brilliance.
