Verbier Festival 2022

The classical world's most anticipated, highest-altitude festival of the year returned in summer 2022. The Verbier Festival came back on July 15 – 31, 2022. It brought the biggest and brightest stars in classical music, revisiting favorite works and taking on brand-new repertoire in the storied Salle des Combins and Verbier Église. Beloved performers of Verbiers past are once again on the docket—alongside some exciting Verbier debuts—in this blockbuster event from the gorgeous Swiss Alps, where the only thing more breathtaking than the view is the music.

Programme
Maurice Ravel: Piano Trio in A minor
Anton Arensky: Piano Trio No.1 in D minor op. 32
Overview

Violinist Marc Bouchkov joins forces with pianist Mao Fujita and cellist Zlatomir Fung for the Festival’s iconic Rencontres Inédites. A rich programme of two contrasting Trios from Ravel and Anton Arenski.

Composed in 1914, Ravel’s deftly constructed Piano Trio was dedicated to his counterpoint teacher, André Gédalge. The metrically fluid Modéré’s opening theme is a Basque one he salvaged from an abandoned work for piano and orchestra. Next comes the puckish ‘Pantoum’: an ABA form, but also drawing on the Malay verse form in which each quatrain’s second and fourth lines become the first and third of the next. A profound Passacaille follows, its bass line derived from the Pantoum’s first theme. A triumphant Finale concludes. Arensky’s 1884 Piano Trio No 1 was in memory of the cellist Karl Davidoff, and features the cello prominently. An expressive Allegro moderato leads to a sparkling Scherzo waltz, then an elegiac Adagio. The Finale opens and closes with a bang, with reminders of the work’s opening theme and the Adagio between.
