Overview

Sergei Babayan lends his deep understanding and insight to a stylistically diverse repertoire from Bach to Rachmaninoff, Schumann to Liszt, plus a work from Andrius Žlabys.

Consisting of 64 variations on a 4-bar theme, Bach’s Chaconne in D minor for solo violin is one of crowning achievements of the strings repertoire, and Busoni’s transcription requires a similar level of pianistic artistry to that which the original places on the violinist. Liszt’s transcriptions of Schubert Lieder were effectively new pieces, preserving the originals’ melodic purity alongside his own distinctive textural and technical complexity. Elaborate textures equally abound in the three Rachmaninoff works, along with emotional turbulence, and tussle between darkness and light. Pianist-composer Andrius Žlabys’s Echoes of Light meanwhile receives its European premiere here, and was written for Babayan. Schumann’s Kreisleriana then brings the pianist-composer theme to a climax, with its wild emotions and unconventional structure which bemused its own dedicatee, Chopin.
