Tan Lihua leads the Beijing Symphony Orchestra in a New Year celebration of orchestral dances, overtures and melodies from China and Europe.
The Beijing Symphony Orchestra has developed a broad repertoire and an extensive public education programme. This concert places Chinese compositions and European orchestral favourites under Tan Lihua, whose biography includes long service as the orchestra's director, artistic director and chief conductor.
The European selections move from Suppé's Light Cavalry and The Queen of Spades overtures to Tchaikovsky's Polonaise and Swan Lake excerpts. Waltzes and polkas by Johann Strauss II and Josef Strauss include Roses from the South, The Blue Danube and The Blacksmith Polka.
Chinese orchestral colour comes from Dance of the Yao People, Reba Dance, On the Field of Hope and three excerpts from The Red Detachment of Women. These pieces set lyrical melody and dance rhythms alongside the energy of the overtures.
Children under 1.2 metres require a ticket for admission.
