Mercedes-Benz Stadium is a world-class multi-purpose retractable roof stadium located in downtown Atlanta Georgia USA. Opened in August 2017 to replace the Georgia Dome the venue serves as the official home for the NFL Atlanta Falcons and MLS Atlanta United FC. It is globally renowned for its futuristic design featuring an innovative eight-panel camera-aperture retractable roof and a massive 360-degree Halo video board.
The stadium is celebrated for its architectural and engineering innovations. Its defining feature is a revolutionary retractable roof made of eight triangular steel petals that slide along straight tracks to open or close in roughly 10 minutes creating a visual illusion akin to a moving camera lens. Suspended directly beneath this roof is a record-breaking 360-degree HD video scoreboard that stands 58 feet tall and spans nearly 1100 feet in circumference wrapping completely around the upper rim of the seating bowl. Additionally a massive floor-to-ceiling transparent glass wall on the northeast facade frames a spectacular view of the downtown Atlanta skyline.
The venue features a highly adaptable modular configuration for seating. For standard American football games and major concert events it accommodates roughly 71000 spectators and can expand to over 75000. For soccer matches a mechanized curtain system retracts the upper bowl to create a more intimate 42500-seat environment. The interior also includes over 2500 television screens ultra-fast stadium-wide Wi-Fi and 190 luxury executive suites.
Mercedes-Benz Stadium was the first professional sports stadium in the world to achieve LEED Platinum certification the highest possible tier of green building standards. The facility utilizes 4000 solar panels to generate renewable energy and features a 680000-gallon rainwater cistern paired with a storm management vault to significantly cut water consumption. Beyond serving as a fortress for its home teams the stadium regularly hosts prominent global events including Super Bowl LIII college football national championships major international soccer tournaments such as Copa America matches for the FIFA World Cup and premier concert tours.
