Verbier Festival 2022

The classical world's most anticipated, highest-altitude festival of the year returned in summer 2022. The Verbier Festival came back on July 15 – 31, 2022. It brought the biggest and brightest stars in classical music, revisiting favorite works and taking on brand-new repertoire in the storied Salle des Combins and Verbier Église. Beloved performers of Verbiers past are once again on the docket—alongside some exciting Verbier debuts—in this blockbuster event from the gorgeous Swiss Alps, where the only thing more breathtaking than the view is the music.

Programme
Francis Poulenc: La Voix humaine
Overview

Soprano Anna Caterina Antonacci delivers Poulenc's devastating tale of distress and heartache, La Voix humaine, with Claudio Vandelli conducting the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra. Clarinetist Martin Fröst then takes to the stage for 'Nomadic Dances'.

With text from a monologue by Jean Cocteau, Poulenc’s powerful La Voix humaine (‘The Human Voice’) of 1959 is an operatic monodrama exploring the anguish of rejection, in the form of a telephone call heard from just one end: a woman trying without success to win back her former lover, having heard he’s to marry someone else the following day. Nomadic Dances then picks up the operatic thread, opening with three orchestral excerpts from Rameau operas – Platée, Les Boréades and Les Indes galantes. Frȍst then takes to clarinet for a fusion of folk and folk-influenced pieces spanning both centuries and continents: Piazzolla’s La muerta del angel; Krivo Sadovsko’s Horo; Brahms’s Hungarian Dance No 1; a traditional Swedish polka; Chick Corea’s Children’s Song No 15; Anders Hillborg’s Dances of Echoes, and a selection of Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances.

Salle des Combins is the Verbier Festival’s main concert hall. It normally seats 1,419. Each row is on a separate tier, which guarantees an excellent view of the stage. Improvements to the soundproofing and heat insulation make this a very high-quality non-permanent venue. All of the Festival’s symphonic concerts, operas, large world music, jazz, dance events and some recitals are presented here.
