Overview

Come along on a journey through the powerful heart and passionate soul of Frida Kahlo.

She was an artist, a master of self-presentation, and an icon: Frida Kahlo. Now, the award-winning dance theater company Enrique Gasa Valga brings the life of one of the most captivating figures in art history to life. Viva la Vida – A Tribute to Frida Kahlo celebrates, with dance perfection, an emotional homage to a life full of strength and resilience. Accompanied by rousing live music and vocals featuring boleros, tangos, and popular Mexican songs, this masterpiece ignites a feast for all the senses!

Frida, accompanied by death her entire life, experienced it in all its intensity: whether moments flooded with sunlight or those as dark as the darkest night. Her story has captivated the world and continues to do so today. Through movement and artistic expression, Enrique Gasa Valga makes Frida's indomitable spirit, her passion, her intensity, and her pain visible. For his dance theater piece, Valga was awarded the Austrian Music Theater Prize, the Golden Schikaneder, for the best ballet production of the 2011/12 season.

Viva la Vida – A Tribute to Frida Kahlo (Preview) is a vibrant theatrical production presented at the historic Semperoper Dresden. Inspired by the extraordinary life and artistic legacy of Frida Kahlo, the performance blends music, dance, visual art, and dramatic storytelling to celebrate one of the most iconic figures in modern art.

The production takes its title from one of Kahlo’s final paintings, symbolizing her enduring passion for life despite immense personal suffering. Through a series of visually striking scenes, the performance explores the many dimensions of Kahlo’s identity: her creative brilliance, her passionate spirit, her physical struggles, and her deep connection to Mexican culture and traditions.

Set against a backdrop inspired by Kahlo’s vivid and surreal artistic universe, the stage becomes a living canvas filled with bold colors, symbolic imagery, and poetic movement. Music and choreography intertwine to evoke the emotional landscapes of Kahlo’s life — from moments of joy and love to experiences of pain, resilience, and artistic transformation.

The preview performance offers audiences an early glimpse into the creative vision of the production before its full premiere. It allows the artistic team to share key scenes, musical themes, and visual concepts while inviting audiences into the imaginative world that shaped Kahlo’s art and legacy.

Presented at the Semperoper Dresden, one of Europe’s most prestigious cultural venues, Viva la Vida – A Tribute to Frida Kahlo promises an immersive and emotionally rich experience that celebrates creativity, individuality, and the enduring power of art.

Semperoper Dresden - Dresden
Location   Theaterplatz 2

Not only one of the most beautiful opera houses in the world, the Semperoper is renowned both in Germany and abroad for the brilliant star-studded performances by Saxon State Opera as well as numerous international guest artists.

This is the home of the Staatskapelle Dresden, an orchestra which looks back on 460 years of uninterrupted music-making. The State Opera Chorus was founded by Carl Maria von Weber in 1817. Operatic history has been written here, with the Semperoper playing host to numerous important premieres, such as Richard Wagner’s "Rienzi", "Der fliegende Holländer" and "Tannhäuser". There is also an indissoluble link to Richard Strauss, nine of whose 15 operas were premiered in Dresden, including "Salome", "Der Rosenkavalier" and "Elektra". The small venue Semper Zwei provides space for diverse forms of music theatre as well as theatrical experiments, and is also the venue for performances of Semperoper Junge Szene.

The magnificent Semperoper dominates the Theaterplatz be-side the river Elbe, forming the centrepiece of the historic old city. The original building opened its doors in 1841, constructed to a design by Gottfried Semper which combined a late Classical style with Renaissance elements. Following a devastating fire in 1869, the citizens of Dresden immediately set about rebuilding their beloved opera house. This was completed in 1878, also to a design by Semper. In 1945, during the final months of World War II, the Semperoper was once again razed to the ground.

After a second reconstruction was successfully completed in 1985, the reopening of one of Europe’s most beautiful opera houses was celebrated with a performance of Carl Maria von Weber’s "Freischütz".
The dazzling interiors were painstakingly reconstructed by local craftsmen and artists according to original plans, with state-of-the art stage machinery and technical fittings in the auditorium. A modern annex was added to house the administrative offices and rehearsal rooms. Internationally renowned for its brilliant acoustics and incomparable performances, audiences from around the world continue to flock here to enjoy unforgettable experiences at the Semperoper Dresden.
