Programme
Overview
Experience a stirring sonic journey with the Solem Quartet as they fuse folk traditions, archival recordings and bold new commissions into a celebration of Britain’s industrial heritage. From the gentle rhythms of a Western Isles waulking song to Julia Wolfe’s relentless Dig Deep and a reimagined Joy Division anthem, this concert pulses with community spirit and creative energy. The Solem Quartet invites you to an unforgettable evening tracing the arc of industry through music. The programme begins with serene field recordings and pastoral folk melodies—including a waulking song from the Western Isles—soon overtaken by the clang and roar of machinery as industry takes hold. Benjamin Britten’s Vivace from Quartet No. 2 ignites a spark of revolution, leading without pause into Julia Wolfe’s Dig Deep, whose driving rhythms capture the sweat and grit of labour. Historic field recordings of Northumbrian piper Tom Clough and a 1976 Llangynwyd pub session are reborn with fresh live accompaniment by violinist William Newell, while William Marsey’s commissioned chorales—woven with recorded conversations from his hometown—offer a poignant contemporary perspective. The concert culminates in a live reinterpretation of Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” reframed through the Quartet’s dynamic voice. This is music as both a testament to hardship and a rallying call to joy and solidarity.
