Overview

"Wing Chun" is a large-scale original Chinese dance drama created by Shenzhen Opera & Dance Theatre. Combining contemporary dance, Chinese martial arts and cinematic stage design, the production tells the legendary story of Wing Chun master Ip Man (Yip Man) and the spirit of perseverance, discipline and cultural inheritance.

"Wing Chun" is one of the most successful contemporary Chinese dance dramas of recent years. The production combines dance, martial arts and theatre to present the life story of Ip Man, the legendary Wing Chun master and teacher of Bruce Lee. The narrative connects two timelines: a modern film crew creating a movie about Ip Man and the historical journey of Ip Man as he develops and spreads Wing Chun martial arts in Hong Kong.

The performance integrates several traditional martial arts styles, including Wing Chun, Tai Chi, Baguazhang, Bajiquan and Praying Mantis Boxing, transforming martial arts movements into expressive choreography. The production is known for its dynamic stage design, powerful fight sequences and fusion of Chinese cultural heritage with modern theatre aesthetics.

The work premiered in 2022 and has toured extensively in China and internationally, including performances in Singapore, the United Kingdom, France and Canada.

The dance drama Wing Chun was written by Feng Shuangbai, chairman of the China Dancers Association, co-directed by the acclaimed choreographers in the Mainland, Han Zhen and Zhou Liya and performed by Shenzhen Opera and Dance Theatre. The story begins with the 20th century film Wing Chun, presenting two parallel narratives: the "backstage" story of the film crew, and the "on-screen" journey of Ip Man’s struggles in Hong Kong. The performance integrates martial arts with classical and modern dance, providing the audience with a captivating visual experience.
