Overview

Yongle Weiyang is a large-scale original Chinese dance drama inspired by the history of the Yongle Palace in Shanxi Province. Through contemporary choreography, visual theatre and traditional Chinese aesthetics, the production tells the story of preserving one of China's greatest cultural treasures and celebrates the enduring spirit of cultural heritage.

Created by China Oriental Performing Arts Group, Yongle Weiyang takes the relocation and preservation of the 13th-century Yongle Palace as its central theme. The narrative spans more than 700 years, weaving together the palace's architecture, murals, glazed ceramics and the dedication of generations of cultural heritage conservators.

The dance drama is divided into four chapters:

  • Ancient Architecture
  • Murals
  • Glazed Ceramics
  • Cultural Heritage

Using contemporary dance, multimedia stage design and traditional Chinese visual symbolism, the production transforms historical monuments into living works of art on stage. Rather than recounting history literally, it creates a poetic dialogue between the craftsmen of the Yuan Dynasty and modern conservators who protected Yongle Palace during its relocation in the 1950s. Since its premiere in 2025, the production has become one of China's most acclaimed new dance dramas and has toured nationally.
