Overview

Hedwig is the Chinese version of the iconic Broadway rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Combining explosive rock music, dark humor, and emotional storytelling, the musical follows Hedwig, a genderqueer East German rock performer searching for identity, love, and self-acceptance.

Hedwig  is a Chinese-language adaptation of the legendary rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch, originally created by John Cameron Mitchell (book and lyrics) and Stephen Trask (music and lyrics). Since its debut, the musical has become a cult classic of contemporary theatre, celebrated for its unique fusion of glam rock, punk aesthetics, comedy, and deeply personal storytelling.

The story follows Hedwig Robinson, a flamboyant rock singer from East Berlin whose life is transformed by a failed gender reassignment operation and a search for love, identity, and artistic recognition. Through a live rock concert performed with her band, Hedwig reveals her turbulent past, broken relationships, and journey toward discovering her own sense of completeness.

The Chinese production preserves the original show's powerful rock energy while presenting the story through a Mandarin adaptation. With live rock instrumentation, dramatic vocals, and a visually striking stage style, Hedwig explores themes of identity, freedom, loneliness, resilience, and the search for one’s true self.
