Programme
Overview

Spring’s Passing is a thoughtful and emotionally nuanced play set in Republican-era China. Inspired by the true history of physicists Wu Chien-Shiung and Gu Jingwei, the play follows two remarkable women whose paths cross at the Institute of Physics of the Academia Sinica.

Through their encounters, alongside the institute's director Ding Xilin, the drama explores scientific ambition, intellectual freedom, personal choice, and the difficult compromises demanded by a turbulent era. Set against the backdrop of a changing China, the play presents a delicate story of mutual understanding, friendship, and the quiet strength of people who continue to pursue their ideals despite the uncertainty of history.

With its restrained storytelling, rich historical context, and deeply human characters, Spring’s Passing is the second work in Theatre Nine People's series of plays about intellectuals in Republican-era China.
