About

After studying with Liselotte Hammer in Cologne, Anja Harteros made her debut at the age of 23 at the opera houses of Gelsenkirchen and Bonn. After winning the Cardiff Singer of the World Competition in 1999, she was invited to the Bavarian State Opera in Munich to sing Agathe in Der Freischütz. Her career then took on an international dimension and engagements rapidly followed at some of the world’s most prestigious opera houses.

She has sung under the baton of many leading conductors, including Marco Armiliato, Ivor Bolton, Sylvain Cambreling, Jesús López Cobos, James Conlon, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Mariss Jansons, James Levine, Fabio Luisi, Zubin Mehta, Ingo Metzmacher, Riccardo Muti, Kent Nagano, Sir Roger Norrington, Antonio Pappano, and Christian Thielemann. She received the Munich Opera Festival Prize for the 2004-2005 season and the Kölner Opernpreis in 2010, and was appointed Kammersängerin at the Bavarian State Opera in 2007. She has appeared at the Paris Opera in the roles of Micaela (Carmen), Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte) and Eva (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg).
More recently, she appeared in La Forza del Destino and sang the roles of Leonora in Il Trovatore, Amelia in Un ballo in maschera, Maddalena in Andrea Chénier and Elisabeth in Tannhäuser at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, Elisabetta in Don Carlo at the Salzburg Festival, London’s Covent Garden, the Vienna Staatsoper, the Zurich Opera and Berlin’s Deutsche Oper, Amelia Grimaldi in Simon Boccanegra at the Berlin Staatsoper, the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier at the Vienna Staatsoper, the title role in Tosca and Amelia in Un ballo in maschera at the Paris Opera and the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, Sieglinde (Die Walküre) at the Salzburg Easter Festival, and Elsa (Lohengrin) at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. She also performs in concert with leading symphony orchestras (Strauss's Four Last Songs, Verdi's Requiem, Beethoven's Missa Solemnis).
