Birgit Wentsch studied at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences for design after her apprenticeship as a men's tailor. She worked as a wardrobe mistress at the Hamburg state Opera, the Festspielhaus of Bayreuth and at the Berliner Ensemble.
From 1989 she worked as a freelance costume designer for Film and dance theatre. She worked with film directors Michael Busch ("in the shadow of the Pyramid", "Seven Heavens") and Philip Gröning ("L'amour, l'argent, l'amour").
From 2001 to 2007 she was the head of the costume Department at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf, and designed the costumes for "Eugene Onegin" directed by Giancarlo del Monaco and for "The beautiful Helena" directed by Christof Loy. With Giancarlo del Monaco she also worked at the Teatro Real in Madrid for the production "Cavalleria rusticana/I Pagliacci".
Since 2007, Birgit Wentsch has been the costume director at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin. At the Leipzig opera house she designed the costumes for " Manon Lescaut "and at the Opera Graz for Johannes Erath the costumes for" Lulu "and"Elektra". For Jürgen Flimm she was with her costumes for " Do you know how to clean tones? Satiesfactionen " at the workshop of the State Opera at the Schiller Theater. In addition, she designed the costumes for the Sciarrino Productions "Macbeth" staged by Jürgen Flimm in 2014 in the former orchestra rehearsal room of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden and "Luci mie traditrici" in 2016 at the Schiller Theater.
