From 26 June to 12 July 2026, the historic Umbrian town of Spoleto hosts the 69th edition of the Festival dei Due Mondi, one of Italy’s leading international performing arts festivals. Under the artistic direction of Daniele Cipriani, the event brings together opera, classical music, dance, theatre and visual arts, transforming the town’s theatres, churches, squares and historic buildings into stages for an extensive cultural programme. The 2026 edition explores the theme of Roots, reflecting on the relationship between cultural heritage, artistic identity and change.
Opera takes centre stage with Samuel Barber’s Vanessa, featuring a libretto by the festival’s founder, Gian Carlo Menotti. The new production is directed by Leo Muscato, with South Korean conductor Sora Elisabeth Lee leading the Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Bologna and the Coro del Teatro Lirico Sperimentale. The festival’s musical programme also features major international performers and ensembles. On 3 July, Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the London Symphony Orchestra, with pianist Yuja Wang, in a programme of works by Prokofiev and Rachmaninoff. Other highlights include piano recitals by Arcadi Volodos and Francesco Piemontesi, an appearance by Laurie Anderson, Eyvind Kang and Martha Mooke, and a concert by Mario Brunello and Giovanni Sollima. The closing concert on 12 July brings together conductor Gianandrea Noseda and the Filarmonica Teatro Regio Torino.
Dance is another important part of the programme, with performances by Rambert, presenting This Is Rambert, and choreographer Marco Goecke, whose Seven Ages is set to music by Kirill Richter. The line-up also includes Du bout des lèvres, created by Benjamin Millepied, and Ejercicios Hacia el Alivio by Spanish flamenco artist Rocío Molina. Alongside these productions, the festival offers theatre, contemporary performance, exhibitions, talks and experimental music events.
The festival’s distinctive character comes from its close connection with Spoleto itself. Performances take place at venues including Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti, Teatro Romano, Teatro Caio Melisso, Piazza Duomo and Rocca Albornoziana, while concerts and exhibitions extend into smaller historic spaces across the town. The 2026 edition features 17 world premieres, nine original productions created for the festival, six European premieres and 12 Italian premieres, reaffirming its commitment to international artistic exchange and new work.
About the Spoleto Festival
Founded in 1958 by the Italian-American composer Gian Carlo Menotti, the Festival dei Due Mondi (Festival of Two Worlds) is one of Italy’s most prestigious international arts festivals. Held annually in the historic Umbrian town of Spoleto, it was conceived as a meeting place for European and American artistic traditions, bringing together different cultures and disciplines in a celebration of the performing arts.
The festival has developed into a major multidisciplinary event, with a programme encompassing opera, classical music, theatre, dance and visual arts. Opera has always been central to its identity, with productions ranging from established masterpieces to rarely performed works and contemporary creations. Concerts include symphonic and chamber music, recitals and vocal performances, while the theatre and dance programme welcomes both renowned international companies and innovative contemporary artists.
One of the festival’s defining features is its use of Spoleto’s historic architecture and public spaces as performance venues. The Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti, Teatro Caio Melisso, Roman Theatre and other cultural landmarks host performances, while Piazza Duomo provides a spectacular setting for large-scale events and concerts. This close relationship between the programme and the town’s architectural heritage gives the festival a distinctive atmosphere, transforming Spoleto into an open-air stage.
Over the decades, the festival has welcomed some of the most influential figures in music and the performing arts, including Luciano Pavarotti, Rudolf Nureyev, Carla Fracci, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Riccardo Muti and Pina Bausch. Its history also includes landmark productions by directors such as Luchino Visconti and Luca Ronconi, as well as premieres and artistic collaborations that have helped introduce new works to international audiences.
Today, the Festival dei Due Mondi continues to combine established repertoire with contemporary creativity, international artistic exchange and emerging talent. Usually held between late June and mid-July, it offers an opportunity to experience opera, music, dance and theatre in one of Italy’s most atmospheric historic towns.
