Phelim McDermott (born 21 August 1963) is an English actor and stage director. He has directed plays and operas in Britain, Germany, Spain, the United States, and Australia. McDermott was a co-founder of the Improbable theatre in 1996.

Phelim McDermott has been directing and performing since 1984. Mr. McDermott improvises with the Comedy Store Players, is an honorary doctor of Middlesex University, and serves on MICHA’s advisory board. His company, Improbable, was recently awarded the Total Theatre Significant Contribution Award for its work in theatre including the Open Space events “Devoted and Disgruntled: What are we going to do about theatre?” Improbable’s award-winning shows include 70 Hill Lane, Lifegame, Spirit, Theatre of Blood and Philip Glass’ Satyagraha at the English National Opera and Metropolitan Opera. With Julian Crouch, Mr. McDermott directed the Metropolitan Opera’s 125th Anniversary Gala. He co-directed Shockheaded Peter in the West End and Off-Broadway, winning an Olivier Award. Mr. McDermott’s initial shows include Cupboard Man (Fringe First Award), Gaudete (Time Out Director’s Award), The Vinegar Works and The Sweet Shop Owner.
