Overview

The Eternal Wave is an award-winning Chinese dance drama by the Shanghai Dance Theatre inspired by the true story of underground intelligence officer Li Bai. Combining contemporary choreography, cinematic storytelling, and original music, the production tells a moving tale of courage, sacrifice, and unwavering loyalty during one of the most turbulent periods in China's history.

The Eternal Wave is a critically acclaimed dance drama by the Shanghai Dance Theatre, inspired by the true story of Communist intelligence officer Li Bai, whose secret radio transmissions played a vital role during the Chinese War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the Chinese Civil War. Premiering in 2018, the production has become one of China's most celebrated contemporary dance works, receiving the prestigious Wenhua Award and touring extensively across the country and abroad.

Set in 1930s and 1940s Shanghai, the dance drama follows Li Xia, a courageous underground radio operator based on Li Bai, as he undertakes dangerous intelligence missions while living under constant threat of discovery. Alongside his wife Lanfen and fellow comrades, he faces betrayal, separation, and personal sacrifice in his unwavering commitment to his country and ideals. The story combines historical events with emotional human drama, portraying themes of love, faith, loyalty, and heroism.

Directed and choreographed by Han Zhen and Zhou Liya, The Eternal Wave blends classical Chinese dance with contemporary movement, cinematic staging, multimedia projections, and an original musical score by composer Yang Fan. Rich visual design, elegant choreography, and powerful storytelling create an immersive theatrical experience that pays tribute to the unsung heroes of China's revolutionary history while celebrating the enduring strength of the human spirit.
